Inside Our Animal Rescue Operations: Saving Injured Cows & Street Dogs in Jaipur

Jaipur alone has over 80,000 stray dogs. Rajasthan has over 1 million. Our animal rescue team at Kindness Welfare Association responds to emergency calls daily — rescuing injured cows, treating street dogs, and rehabilitating birds. Here is what our work actually looks like on the ground.

The Scale of the Problem: Jaipur's Animal Welfare Crisis

Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, is home to over 80,000 stray dogs and an uncounted population of abandoned and injured cows (data: Rajasthan government & Udaipur Times). Rajasthan as a whole has an estimated 1 million stray dogs — one of the highest state-level figures in India.

India's total stray dog population stands at 15.3 million nationally, and with Rajasthan accounting for 1 million of those, the state faces one of the most acute animal welfare challenges in the country.

These animals are not "strays by choice." Many are abandoned pets, injured road accident survivors, or animals that have been displaced from their natural habitats. Without intervention, they suffer from starvation, infections, untreated wounds, and exposure.

Kindness Welfare Association steps in where municipal systems cannot.

Our Animal Rescue Team

Our animal rescue volunteers operate across Jaipur, responding to public distress calls about injured and sick animals. We coordinate with a network of licensed veterinarians in the city to provide medical treatment, and we maintain temporary recovery space at our Shyam Nagar facility.

When we receive an animal rescue call, our team responds with:

  • Rapid ground response: Volunteers with appropriate equipment reach the animal as quickly as possible
  • Safe transport: Injured animals are transported carefully to avoid further injury
  • Emergency triage and first aid: Wounds are cleaned, bandaged, and assessed
  • Veterinary referral: Serious cases are rushed to tied-up licensed vets in Jaipur
  • Recovery and rehabilitation: Animals recovering from treatment are monitored and cared for until stable

Animals We Rescue and Care For

Cows and Cattle

Injured, abandoned, and malnourished cows are among our most frequent emergency cases. Rajasthan's expanding road network and high vehicle density mean cattle road accident injuries are sadly common. We rescue and provide initial care to injured cows, coordinating with the local network of Gaushalas for long-term rehabilitation when possible.

Cows are deeply revered culturally in Rajasthan, but the groundwork of actually rescuing them when injured is largely absent from the mainstream system. Our volunteers fill that gap.

Stray Dogs

With over 80,000 stray dogs in Jaipur alone, the scale of suffering is enormous. Dogs affected by mange (a painful parasitic skin disease), deep wounds from vehicle accidents, or severe malnutrition are among the most common cases we attend to. Our team provides wound care, anti-parasitic treatment, and when possible, coordinates vaccination and ABC (Animal Birth Control) sterilization referrals.

Rajasthan was the first state in India to issue detailed stray dog management guidelines aligning with the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023 — emphasizing sterilization, vaccination, and designated feeding zones. We strongly support and complement these government efforts.

Birds

Injured birds — particularly pigeons trapped in synthetic kite thread (manja), and the Indian Peafowl (Rajasthan's state bird) injured on roads — also receive emergency care from our team.

How Much Does Animal Rescue Cost?

The cost of a single animal rescue and a standard 15 to 30-day recovery period can range from ₹1,500 to ₹20,000+, depending on the severity of injury, medication required, and follow-up veterinary care. Surgeries and complex cases can cost significantly more.

Your donation directly funds these operations. Every ₹500 you donate can cover a dog's wound treatment and two weeks of food. Every ₹2,000 helps rescue and treat a seriously injured cow.

All donations to Kindness Welfare Association are 80G-certified (Registration: AAMCK1117BF20261), meaning you also receive income tax deduction benefits while saving an animal's life.
