A legally accurate, thoroughly fact-checked guide to claiming Section 80G tax deduction on your charitable donations in India. Learn exactly how much tax you save, who is eligible, what the rules are, and why donating to Kindness Welfare can save you thousands.

What is Section 80G of the Income Tax Act?

Section 80G of the Income Tax Act, 1961 is a Government of India provision that allows individual taxpayers, HUFs, companies, and firms to claim a tax deduction on donations made to qualifying charitable organizations. When you donate to an 80G-certified NGO, a portion of your donated amount is deducted from your total taxable income — which directly reduces the tax you owe to the government.

Important: The 80G deduction is only available under the Old Tax Regime. If you have opted for the New Tax Regime (under Section 115BAC), you are not eligible to claim this deduction. This is a common source of confusion, so please verify your chosen tax regime with your CA or on the Income Tax portal before filing.

How Much Tax Can You Actually Save?

Under Section 80G, the deduction depends on the category of the recipient organization. Kindness Welfare Association falls under the category: "50% deduction subject to a qualifying limit of 10% of Adjusted Gross Total Income (AGTI)".

This means:

  • 50% of your donation amount is deducted from your taxable income
  • This deduction cannot exceed 10% of your Adjusted Gross Total Income

Critical Rules You Must Know

1. Cash Donation Limit

Donations above ₹2,000 in cash are NOT eligible for 80G deduction. All donations above this amount must be made through cheque, demand draft, UPI, credit/debit card, or online bank transfer. This is a hard legal requirement under the Income Tax Act.

Our donation portal at kindnesswelfare.com/donate uses Razorpay, which automatically supports all eligible payment modes and issues a timestamped digital receipt.

2. Old Tax Regime Only

If you have opted for the new tax regime under Section 115BAC, 80G deductions are not available to you. Only those in the old tax regime can claim this benefit.

3. Donee Must Be Approved

You can only claim the deduction if you donate to an organization with a valid, current 80G certification from the Income Tax Department.
